赵季平大师为《大话西游》配乐，当时的剧本叫做《大话东游》。赵季平拿到这个叫《大话东游》的本子后，觉得它简直在瞎胡闹。故事离奇、蹩脚，充斥着港味儿的形容词、感叹词，让人很不舒服，他连看三天才读完。这部电影与他以前创作的严肃电影很不一样。 港方同时还给他带了一段卢冠廷为影片写的主题曲的旋律，后来赵季平就在它的基础上为全片配乐。 赵季平确定了音乐的主题：反映人性的最终统一，中间穿插不和谐音，比如妖精出没、战争、灾难等。
