《战台风》创作时，王昌元的父亲、上海音乐学院古筝专业导师王巽之先生带领的乐器改革小组已基本完成了新型古筝的改革工作——将古筝弦数增多，从原来的16根增至21根；将琴弦质地改变，将丝弦或钢弦改为钢丝、铜丝、尼龙丝相结合。改革之后的乐器，音域拓宽，音量加大，为《战台风》在筝上进行极大张力的音乐表现提供了可能，《战台风》的成功演出，也有力地证明了新型古筝改革工作的成功。 [1]
