1985年，罗大佑以一张名为《青春舞曲》的现场专辑暂别了歌坛，由于不满当时的台湾当局的文化政策，于次年移民美国。在美国定居的多年间，身为音乐人的罗大佑由于多次踏足香港，也开始对香港产生了兴趣，并将音乐创作的视角，投向了对这个在现代中国具有特殊意义的城市身上。由此，罗大佑在1986年创作了《东方之珠》的粤语版歌曲。二十世纪八十年代末，罗大佑终于确定了将香港当成自己音乐事业的第二个起点，随着“音乐工厂”这个厂牌的揭幕，罗大佑也将音乐视角从台湾正式转向香港，并于此时将自己的旧作亲自改写为普通话版歌词，并于1991年推向市场 。
