三色旗的作曲者为罗马尼亚作曲家奇普里安·波隆贝斯库，原先该曲为一首爱国歌曲，但1977年被罗马尼亚社会主义共和国选用为国歌，取代原先的国歌《我们赞美你，罗马尼亚》，但歌词被更改并添加了许多共产主义相关的歌词。1989年罗马尼亚革命发生后，齐奥塞斯库政权垮台，三色旗的国歌地位也被《醒来吧，罗马尼亚人》给取代。
