这首国歌的歌词来自于哥伦比亚前总统拉斐尔·努涅斯所创作的诗歌，他当时请求他的朋友，一位歌剧演员奥雷斯特·辛迪奇为他谱曲。
1920年10月28日，哥伦比亚总统第33号法令宣布将此歌定为国歌，1995年的198号法令规定本国所有的电视台和电台在早六点和晚六点时必须播放国歌。
