贝多芬的《第八交响曲》是他最短小精悍的交响曲，但这并不意味着它在精神与气场上是渺小的。当有人告诉贝多芬，这首交响曲在音乐会上的反响不如《第七交响曲》时，据说他哼了一声，回答道：“那是因为这首曲子要好得多！”他说这种话可能更多地出于一种自卫的心态——还有比《第七交响曲》更好的交响曲吗？然而，尽管《第八交响曲》篇幅相对精简，对海顿和莫扎特的古典主义怀有略带讽刺的致敬，它仍然具有高度的原创性，充满了奇妙的惊喜。在贝多芬的作品中，没有一个像《第八交响曲》一样，在第一乐章大量地使用快节奏的强弱对比。第二乐章《谐谑的小快板》（Allegretto scherzando）轻松幽默，管乐吹奏大量短促有规律的音符，仿佛节拍器的滴答声。第三乐章不再是一贯的谐谑曲，而被改为小步舞曲。但这首小步舞曲没有了之前的宫廷式的优雅,而运用了有些沙哑、粗鲁的节奏，有如全身心地投入到啤酒花园般的欢乐中。第四乐章虽然名为《活泼的快板》（Allegro vivace），但通常演奏到急板的地步。在其中，贝多芬更加强调了对比性，许多乐句都写得别出心裁，最后全曲在灿烂的主调和弦乐段中画上句号。
有人说《第八交响曲》只有音乐鉴赏家才能欣赏得来。但事实上，听众无需专业知识也能感受到它的美妙——只需要用心多听几遍。
