1811年,贝多芬萌生了用D 小调创作一部交响曲的想法,这也是莫扎特那部令人生畏的《安魂曲》所使用的调性。这部交响曲的创作,最终花费了贝多芬12 年的时间,其中最棘手的部分是结尾:究竟是要以一段带有悲剧性特点的纯管弦乐,还是以基于宗教题材的合唱乐章结尾?最终,贝多芬决定使用合唱,但并未落脚于宗教,而是将这个乐章与他思考多年的另一个项目——席勒歌颂自由与平等的赞美诗《欢乐颂》——合二为一。不过,新的问题又出现了:在交响曲中使用合唱堪称前无古人,如何才能证明这样的创作是合理的?贝多芬的解决办法是让交响乐讲述一个不断展开的故事,“欢乐颂”则是这个故事的高潮。
《第九交响曲》以壮烈的第一乐章开篇,所有的希望似乎都已被击碎。紧随其后的却是一段恢弘跳跃的谐谑曲乐章,为中间的三声中部(Trio)引入了希望的光亮,也为之后的合唱部分埋下伏笔。第三乐章“如歌的柔板”温柔、美丽而具有沉思气质,却被第四乐章开头的号角齐鸣打断。接下来便是整部交响曲最激动人心的部分。“欢乐颂”所在的第四乐章由一个不协和音拉开序幕,前三个乐章的主题先后短暂出现,又先后被大提琴和低音提琴的宣叙调否定,直到“欢乐颂”的主题出现。器乐演奏的第一部分结束后,第二部分的男中音与此前的低音弦乐异曲同工,而且用歌词更加明确了意图:“啊!朋友,不要这些调子!”此后,“欢乐颂”的主题不断发展,先后由男中音独唱、四重唱、合唱呈现。这种“四海之内皆兄弟”、全人类因“欢乐”而团结的愿景,随着山呼海啸的管弦乐奔向终点处狂喜的高潮。
