Introduction

格什温代表作之一，作于1923年，交响乐完整版

格什温的音乐会处女作《蓝色狂想曲》（1924）牢牢把握住爵士时代的脉搏，成为了美国音乐的杰出代表作。1923 年，自诩“爵士之王”的Paul Whiteman计划举办一场实验音乐会，探索古典乐和爵士乐融合的潜力，并邀请格什温为钢琴和爵士交响乐创作一部作品。据说，当时正忙于筹备音乐喜剧《可爱的小恶魔》的作曲家忘记了这个邀约,
直到 1924 年1月在报纸上读到关于音乐会的消息，他才想起这一委托，并在短时间内创作出这一作品。1924 年2 月12 日，作品在纽约的风神音乐厅首演，格什温在Whiteman 率领的22人管弦乐团协奏下，亲自演奏钢琴。这场以“现代音乐的实验”命名的音乐会，得到了评论家与音乐界的一致赞誉，尽管钢琴独奏尚不完整，菲尔德·格罗菲的编曲也略显仓促，人们对格什温的新作依然称赞不绝。Whiteman 麾下的单簧管演奏家 Ross Gorman 在开场吹出如泣如诉的滑奏，接下来是一连串蓝调风格的切分旋律，构成作品华丽热情的中间部分。独奏部分则借鉴了拉格泰姆和跨步钢琴风格。《蓝色狂想曲》大获成功之后，格罗菲又将其改编为完整交响乐和更为精简的“剧场交响乐”版本。
