Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 in B♭ Minor, Op. 23

1874年，34岁的柴可夫斯基开始创作他的第一部钢琴和管弦乐作品。他本人并不是钢琴演奏家，原本的计划是由莫斯科音乐学院院长尼古拉·鲁宾斯坦首演。然而，鲁宾斯坦对这部新作品提出了很多批评。于是在 1875年10月25日，作品由汉斯·冯·比格在波士顿举行了首演。尽管首演取得了巨大的成功，在莫斯科首演不久后，由19岁的谢尔盖·塔涅耶夫与鲁宾斯坦指挥（这时鲁宾斯坦终于意识到这是怎样一部杰作），柴可夫斯基接受了钢琴家爱德华·丹罗伊特和亚历山大·西洛蒂的建议，在1879年和1888年的两次修改中重写了大部分独奏部分，最终版本是现今常演奏的版本。例如，钢琴开场著名的气势磅礴的和弦，一开始为增加音乐色彩被设定为更加柔和的琶音。这三个乐章都是以民歌为基础：乌克兰民歌在首末乐章，而中间乐章《行板》是法国民歌，他们具有共同的旋律特征。这部协奏曲很快就确立了自己如华丽辉煌的形象地位，恢弘的乐曲开场预示了令人信服和充满动力的音乐。中间乐章融合了温柔的摇篮曲和精灵风的谐谑曲风格，核心的终乐章迈向一个激动人心的结局。凭借精湛技艺，管弦乐色彩和鼓舞人心的辉煌旋律，至今为止，这仍然是柴可夫斯基最受欢迎的作品之一。
