作为全世界最受欢迎的一大芭蕾舞剧，《天鹅湖》的源起可以追溯到 1871 年的夏天。当时，为了给姐姐孩子们的舞蹈伴奏，柴可夫斯基创作了一系列迷人的音乐小品，其中就包括《天鹅湖》的故事。巧合的是，四年之后，莫斯科大剧院（Bolshoi Theater）也向他发来邀约，希望他能基于同一故事创作一部完整的芭蕾舞剧。
《天鹅湖》在 1877 年2月20 日首演时，由于对舞者的要求过高，柴可夫斯基原作中大约三分之一的乐谱都被弃用。事实上，那时的芭蕾观众也没有准备好接受这种全新的、情感力量丰沛的音乐。直到近一个世纪之后，柴可夫斯基为《天鹅湖》谱写的无与伦比的音乐，才以原貌重新演出。
