柴可夫斯基的《第五交响曲》是一曲在逆境中获取胜利的赞歌。一段沉静凝重的旋律为作品拉开帷幕，这是一段代表命运的动机。这段动机在每个乐章中反复出现，逐渐发生变化，代表作曲家终于掌握了自己的命运，找到了自己的道路。柴可夫斯基似乎在乐曲开头就遇到了困难，不知该如何继续。他最终展开了一段叙述，与命运的抗争塑造了第一乐章。这段叙述随后不再出现，作曲家继续通过结构更传统的交响曲形式探索命运的主题。第一乐章逐渐脱离晦暗的命运动机，开始构建欢乐的高潮。慢板第二乐章始于悲喜交织的圆号独奏，这也是柴可夫斯基最为凄美的旋律之一。音乐接下来变得越发活泼，双簧管和单簧管接连奏出更富活力的主题，但沉思的情绪依旧。第三乐章是圆舞曲，和柴可夫斯基的芭蕾舞曲异曲同工。交响乐配器格外精巧，圆舞曲的节奏不时让位给弦乐的低音拨奏。在第二和第三乐章中，命运主题继续不详地若隐若现，似乎成为了被忘却的记忆。但在终曲开头，它又回到了舞台中央，只不过从阴暗的小调转为充满胜利气息的大调。终曲情感复杂多
