Brahms Piano Concerto No.2 in B♭ Major Op. 83
完成《第一钢琴协奏曲》20年后，勃拉姆斯在1878 年开始着手创作他的第二部钢琴协奏曲。期间他暂时停笔，投入《小提琴协奏曲》，随后又回到《第二钢琴协奏曲》的创作，终于在 1881年夏天将其完成。乐曲具有明显的交响风格，包括四乐章的宏大架构，第二乐章的“谐谑曲”等等。但从很多意义上，这又像是加强版的室内乐，灵感来自勃拉姆斯自己的多部钢琴四重奏、《钢琴五重奏》和《圆号三重奏》（后者的影响在开场乐章表现得最为明显）。音乐语言浪漫、私密、若有所思，钢琴演奏难度比《第一钢琴协奏曲》犹有过之，尽管表现得并不明显，表现出勃拉姆斯对这种乐器的理解发展到了新的阶段，从年少气盛的炫技方式到内省的私密载体。第一乐章始于圆号和钢琴之间的抒情对话，铺开相互交缠的复杂乐思。D 小调《谐谑曲》同样洋溢着繁复
风格，大调三重奏具有亨德尔的韵味，显示出巴洛克音乐对勃拉姆斯的重要性。类似室内乐的慢板乐章，以大提琴独奏为框架，相比之下钢琴更像是装饰而非主题材料的呈现者。这里引用了勃拉姆斯三年前的艺术歌曲《渴望死亡》。终曲是复杂的《回旋曲》，轻盈的舞蹈节奏与前两个乐章的宏大凝重形成鲜明对比。
