莫扎特的钢琴协奏曲不仅代表了他颠倒众生的创作才华，也反映了他作为键盘演奏大师的卓越技巧——毕竟，他最初是为自己的双手写下了这些音乐。作为钢琴神童，莫扎特年仅6岁便开始巡演，可以根据任意给定主题即兴演奏，还能用黑布蒙住双手弹奏极为复杂的乐曲，让观众瞠目结舌。到 1786 年创作《A大调第23号钢琴协奏曲K.488》时，莫扎特已经是奥地利最负盛名的钢琴家。为了让以善变著称的维也纳观众感到满意，他明白自己需要创作一部尽善尽美的杰作。他有意避免紧张刺激的氛围，完全弃用了小号和鼓，而是一如既往地让灿烂的旋律魔力轻柔流淌：除了传统的弦乐交响，协奏曲仅使用了一支长笛、两支单簧管、两支巴松和两把圆号。加上第 16 号到第 19号，五部钢琴协奏曲组成了一个特别的组合，按莫扎特所说是“留给我自己和一个音乐爱好者和鉴赏家组成的小圈子”。在莫扎特数以百计的作品里,这部钢琴协奏曲的第二乐章“柔板”是唯——首使用升F小调创作的乐曲，含情脉脉，有如天籁。
