拉赫玛尼诺夫这部 C小调杰作，最初题献给
Nikolai Dahl——这位医生曾在巴黎接受过音乐教育，是一名业余中提琴手，也正是他通过几个月的治疗帮助作曲家走出了抑郁症的阴影。曾经困扰作拉赫玛尼诺夫多时的那种绝望感，源于他的《第一交响曲》在 1897 年堪称灾难性的首演。当时对这部作品的批判之激烈，直接导致作曲家在长达三年的时间里失去了对于自己创作能力的所有信心。不过，在 Dahl的治疗治下，通过催眠和积极自我暗示等疗法，拉赫玛尼诺夫最终创作出了《第二钢琴协奏曲》，一部性格鲜明、且能让作曲家名垂青史的伟大作品。
在《第二钢琴协奏曲》的开篇，我们首先会听到钢琴独奏演绎的如钟声般的几个大和弦。紧随其后的，是弦乐组演奏出的具有浓郁俄国风格的、波澜壮阔的第一主题。由于拉赫玛尼诺夫本人是一位“巨手钢琴家”、能够轻松跨越一个八度，他笔下的钢琴独奏部分天然带有高深的技巧要求。比如这部协奏曲旋风一般的开篇、第二乐章的华彩和莫乐章里狂喜般的高潮，都需要钢琴家异常灵巧的技术才能驾驭。
