柴可夫斯基的《第四交响曲》是一曲赞歌，赞颂欢乐和幸福战胜命运的压迫。作品创作于 1877-78年，那段时间对作曲家来说交织着痛苦与希望：身为同性恋的柴可夫斯基1877年违心地成婚，那段婚姻对他而言堪称灾难，让他患上抑郁症并企图自杀。幸运的是，他在前一年找到了新的赞助人Nadezhda von Meck，后者在金钱和感情上的支持帮他度过了难关。柴可夫斯基把这首交响曲献给von Meck，并写了许多封信来向她解释音乐的含义。第一乐章随着严酷的号声开场,柴可夫斯基将其比作贝多芬《第五交响曲》的著名开篇，也就是代表命运的动机。命运动机在第一乐章中反复出现，阴暗的味道悄然渗进包含一段华尔兹的欢快主旋律之中。第二乐章由柔美的双簧管旋律引入，情绪哀伤而豁达。柴可夫斯基将其描述为劳累一天之后的忧郁。第三乐章《谐谑曲》由贯穿始终的弦乐拨奏推进，作曲家在信中写道，这里代表“迷醉的初始阶段”为“想象力解开了束缚”。木管和铜管乐器奏出欢乐的歌曲和飘渺的军乐进行曲，描绘出一连串快速闪过的画面。《终曲》的主题来自俄罗斯民歌《田野中的白桦树》,作曲家将其改编为华丽的管弦乐炫技佳作。临近结束时，命运动机再度出现，但音乐的正向能量占据了上风，全曲在胜利的狂欢中结束。
